My life's work is to help people do their best work.

I’m Phumla Motsa, Founder and Lead Occupational Therapist at Motsa Health.

As a Disability and Work Productivity Consultant, I work with some of the leading insurance companies in South Africa, including Old Mutual, Momentum, Hollard, Liberty, and Alexander Forbes.

Here are some of the reasons my clients choose to work with me again and again...

I bring nearly two decades of experience to my cases.

I have assessed over 200 employees for Functional Capacity Evaluations, covering more than 20 different diagnoses. This extensive experience (together with my love for my work) ensures that I bring a wealth of knowledge and insight to each case.

I partner with HR personnel to proactively prevent injuries.

I partner with HR personnel to perform ergonomics risk assessments to prevent the development of musculoskeletal conditions. I also provide training on managing cognitive and psychosocial workloads for mental health. This proactive approach is a great step forward in the quest for a happier, healthier, more productive workforce.

I make challenging return-to-work transitions smoother.

Returning to work after a long absence can be a difficult transition for both employer and employee.I made it my mission to bring the perspective that's needed to facilitate a smooth transition back to the workplace for the employee — ensuring a win-win outcome for everyone.

I support HR practitioners to make those difficult decisions.

Sometimes an employee cannot return to work — at least in the capacity for which they were employed. In these cases, I can help an HR practitioner make an informed decision and explore alternative avenues to ensure the best outcomes for all parties involved.

It's not the reason I do it,
but I'm pretty proud of my certificate wall ;)

I have not stopped learning since I graduated with a BSc in Occupational Therapy from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2006.I am fascinated by the advances in occupational therapy and my further training qualifications include:

  • 2020: Certificate in Ergonomics, Darcie Jeremy (Board Certified Professional Ergonomists)

  • 2017: Post Graduate Studies in Health Economics, University of Cape Town

  • 2015: Harvard Business School, Harvard ManageMentor Programme, Johannesburg

  • 2008: Diploma in Vocational Rehabilitation, University of Pretoria

With a commitment to science-backed approaches and evidence-based recommendations, I use scientific methods to assess an individual's ability to perform job tasks through comprehensive Functional Capacity Evaluations. This approach ensures accurate and reliable results, allowing for informed decisions regarding an employee’s capabilities and needs.

How Does This Process Play Out in Practice?

Great question. I think the best way to answer it is to tell you the stories of some of my clients.

Overcoming Low Vision to Return to Work

An executive in her 40s developed multiple health issues, resulting in low vision.I met with her bi-monthly to ensure she was on the right medical track. We are now in the process of reintegrating her back to work successfully.

Thriving After an Autoimmune Condition

A client with an autoimmune condition had been booked off sick for several months, and her employer asked for my assistance in her return-to-work process. We began with a functional capacity evaluation, followed by meetings with her employer and line manager to stipulate her capabilities. I liaised with her treating team, who adjusted her medications and provided support. It was tough going at first and the client struggled with returning to work. But this is the nature of the return to work journey. I knew that we could overcome the challenges by adjusting the initial plan.I worked with the client’s employer and together we were able to find an alternative role for her.The client is now thriving in a new position with set hours and is loving her work.

Case Study

From overwhelmed by chronic illness to thriving in a new position

The Client

A dedicated executive strained by autoimmune conditions

The client, a woman in her 40's with an MBA, had been a high-achiever in her corporate career, despite living with multiple autoimmune conditions, including lupus, psoriatic arthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. However, these chronic conditions began to create significant hurdles in her ability to perform job tasks, leading to severe fatigue, cognitive impairments, and other related symptoms. She described her struggle, saying, "I wasn't coping at work because of my illness, as well as anxiety and stress related to that. I felt the workload was just unmanageable."

The Challenge

Balancing health and career in a demanding environment

The client faced the daunting task of balancing her health needs with the demands of her job. The chronic symptoms of her autoimmune conditions made it increasingly difficult to maintain her usual level of productivity. Her employer, though eager to support her and promote inclusivity, was concerned about minimizing disruptions and maintaining a productive workplace. The challenge was to create a comprehensive and strategic plan that would allow the client to return to work in a productive and fulfilling role — without compromising her well-being.

The Solution

A personalised approach to returning to work

Recognising the complexity of the situation, Phumla Motsa stepped in with a carefully tailored approach to support the client’s return to work. The process began with a thorough case assessment and planning, where Phumla reviewed the client's health evaluations and crafted a personalised plan suited to her specific needs. The client appreciated this attention to detail, noting, "You take it seriously, and you go into the discussions with the business with my best interests in mind."Collaborative meetings followed, involving the client, her employer, and her medical team to ensure everyone was aligned on the path forward. The employer took an active role by identifying an alternative, less demanding role that was more suitable for the client’s condition. Necessary accommodations and modifications were implemented, thanks to Phumla's efforts in advocating for the client."You were able to have the conversations with my employer — to actually say it, to advocate for me... and that's what led to them ultimately finding me another new role in the organisation," the client shared.Phumla also worked closely with the client’s treating medical team, who adjusted her medications and provided additional support to aid in her transition back to work. Despite the initial challenges, Phumla's approach ensured that every obstacle was met with compassion and practical solutions. As the client expressed, "On a personal level, you're just an incredible human being and have been an incredible support to me. I always leave our discussions feeling supported, heard, witnessed."Phumla's commitment to finding the right fit didn’t stop at planning. She ensured the client’s new role matched her abilities and provided a supportive environment."You helped me get out of that situation and find a manager who is just the most... supportive. She supports me in any of the projects I'm doing, and removes barriers," said the client, highlighting the practical impact of Phumla’s interventions.

The Result

Thriving in a new role with renewed confidence

Initially overwhelmed by the prospect of returning to work, the client found renewed energy and purpose in a role that was custom-fitted to her abilities and medical needs. Phumla’s unwavering support and strategic adjustments were crucial in this transition. The client is now thriving in her new position, feeling genuinely valued and supported by her workplace. This adjustment has not only improved her quality of life but has also led to greater job satisfaction and a healthier work-life balance. The successful outcome was the result of a collaborative effort involving the employee, her employer, the insurer, and the medical team. Each played a vital role, from providing necessary support and resources to offering expert guidance on managing the client’s condition.Phumla facilitated the entire process, ensuring clear communication and coordination among all parties. The intervention, conducted in compliance with the Labour Relations Act (LRA), has assured the employer that they have done everything possible to support an employee with a disability. This experience underscores the importance of having structured processes in place to manage sickness, incapacity, and disability within the workforce. As a result, the company has not only bolstered productivity but also enhanced workplace culture, and strengthened its reputation as a conscientious and adaptable employer.
